Changing Information for Your TSP
How and Why To Change Information for Your TSP
Life happens. The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board understands this and allows for you to change your information on the Thrift Savings Plan account to better align with your life. Keeping up with the correction of the account will make it easier should some life event arise later down the line.
For starters, should your mailing address change or if your name changes due to marriage (among other reasons); make sure to inform TSP of the necessary changes. Also inform your agency and ask them to tell TSP to make the changes if you are actively employed. This will stave off any confusion later on at times when confusion would be amplified. If you are separate from the Federal civilian services and the military, changes in address and name will need to be submitted by Form TSP-9 and TSP-15.
The subscribed to the account pass on, become incapacitated, the spouse of that account holder has certain rights in dealing with the account. But the spouse is also has certain rights while both parties are still alive. Any time a loan or withdrawal from the TSP account is made, the spouse must consent in writing if you are FERS employee or notified of the request if you are a CSRS employee. Exception to the above can be made through Form TSP-16.
In the event of your death, the beneficiary designations shall be awarded in accordance with your wishes expressed on Form TSP-3. When no Designation of Beneficiary has been given, the account is distributed by statutory order of precedence. The TSP account does not honor wills or prenups.
